A review of The Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Smart train

It’s sad to say it out loud (or type), but “ma Bobs”, our second little baba is growing up fast. With each day she seems to be learning something new, having preferences and opinions on different things and foods, and becoming more and more of an actual little person. Which is no good. Our little skinny wrigglebum has now become a hamster-cheeked crawling machine that loves to interact with as many things as she can get her fat hands on.

Recently we were offered the opportunity to review the Laugh & Learn Puppy’s Smart Train from Fisher Price. Having had previous great experience with their Imaginext range; Squish’s Imaginext Castle is still a massive hit with both the boys in this house (big and small), we were more than happy to see what their younger toys could do for Bobs. If it was anywhere near as good for Bobs as the Kick and Play Piano Gym we’ve got, then we’d be sold!

First things first, though. Bobs has always been a biter. Even in her early weeks as a tiny, scrawny, chicken-legged baby she was always clamouring for something to chew on. All this despite her lack of any teeth to this very day. The Laugh & Learn Smart train comes with 3 animal rattles that I rarely see out of her mouth. Although they’re not particularly soft, there’s something about them that attracts her little stubby fingers to them straight away.

Obviously that’s not the main purpose of the ‘Smart’ train, otherwise I imagine it’d just be called the ‘Bitey train’. The Laugh & Learn smart train has 2 main parts to it; the Train itself, and then two carriages, each with spaces to fit one of the animals in. Placing any one of the animals onto the train activates the music that has a short little jingle to reward Bobs with putting them in the right place. On the side of the train there are 5 numbered buttons, each one a different shape for your little one to learn.

The main hook of the train is that it grows with your baby, with it having 3 separate settings, or Smart stages™, each one going up in complexity:

Level 1 – Explore, for Ages Six Months and Older

First words and sounds spark baby’s curiosity, with busy activations, like pressing shape buttons or the smokestack for phrases and motorised action. Hear simple words like, “heart; yellow; two.”

Level 2 – Encourage, for Ages 12 Months and Older

Prompt baby though questions and simple directions. This level expands on the introduction of letters, colours and more by encouraging baby to get involved. Hear prompts like, “let’s sing the ABCs.”

Level 3 – Pretend, for Ages 18 Months and Older

Imaginative fun and early role play. All aboard with puppy, monkey and froggy. Older babies can engage in imaginative play inside puppy’s world. Hear phrases like, “the train loves to go choo-choo. Can you?”

No train would be complete without actually being able to move and be pushed along by budding little drivers. The Smart train does just this with a press of the green smokestack which activates its lights, music and drives the train along (not too quickly) for a few seconds. Bobs is quickly working this one out and loves to (admittedly) hammer the smokestack then go chase the train.

It’s a really well made toy and has survived a lot of bumps, knocks and falls over already. Usually with most of her toys, her big brother has “helped” her play with it (i.e. taken it for himself), but with the Smart Train he has actually showed her what to do, and then clapped when she copies. It’s lovely to watch them play together, instead of constantly saying “out of her face, that’s enough kisses, don’t put that on her head” x infinity…

The main features of the Laugh & Learn Train are:

  • Press the smokestack to activate motorized action, lights & sounds
  • Motorized train encourages crawl-along fun
  • 50+ sing-along songs, tunes & phrases
  • Includes Smart Stages™ technology – learning content changes as baby grows
  • 3 levels of play offer fresh songs, phrases & sounds for your little one’s age & stage
  • Manual switch for Smart Stages™ level changes
  • Place any figure in the conductor’s seat to hear opposites
  • Busy activities include a slider ladybug, ABC spinner, number roller, clacker beads & more
  • Press any of the five shape buttons to unlock more fun
  • Includes Puppy, Monkey & Froggy rattle figures – just the right size for baby’s hands
  • No cords, no plugs, no hassle
  • Teaches colours, shapes, letters, opposites & more
  • Requires 2 C batteries

The Puppy’s Laugh & Learn Smart Train is a great little addition to any baby’s toy chest. With its sturdy, chunky build, bright lights, happy music and appreciated biteys it gets two very little, fat thumbs up from Bobs. Its RRP is around the £34.99 mark, but with a little bit of looking around you can find it for as little as £23, which I think is a bargain and a great little present for Christmas.

*For the purpose of this review, we were sent this toy free of charge however all opinions are our own*

  1. Looks good. We have the similar Fisher-Price Amazing Animals Sing & Go Choo-Choo which is similar but without the stages of learning. M has loved it since 6 months and I would imagine would love this one too!
